Try Filarr with sample data

Download ready-made files, linked notes in English or French, and a 200-note demo vault, then import them to explore Filarr.

Filarr is easier to discover when it is full. Instead of starting from an empty screen, download one of the sample sets below, import it, and try search, previews, links and the graph view on realistic content.

Everything in these sets is fictional. Alex Morgan is an invented freelance designer, her clients Northwind Coffee and Lumen Health do not exist, and Meridian is an imaginary company. No real person or real data is involved.

Each download is a ZIP file. Unzip it on your computer before you import it: Filarr reads ZIP files but does not extract them.

Alex Morgan's files

What is inside

The working files of a freelance designer, sorted into 8 folders:

  • Archives: a ZIP archive of last year's projects.
  • Clients: two subfolders, Lumen Health and Northwind Coffee, with PDF documents, wireframes, logo concepts, a Word document and an email.
  • Contracts: two contracts in PDF.
  • Invoices & Quotes: invoices and a quote in PDF, and an income spreadsheet.
  • Photos: five photos.
  • Projects: two subfolders. Portfolio refresh holds images, a short video, an audio file and a Markdown draft. Studio website holds HTML, CSS and Python code.
  • To sort: six badly named files, such as IMG_2041.jpg, document(1).pdf and scan0003.pdf, waiting to be put away.
  • Travel: a Lisbon workshop subfolder with a flight itinerary, a hotel booking, a packing list and a calendar file.

Import them

Filarr imports files, not whole folders from your computer. So you recreate the folders in Filarr, then add the files of each one.

  1. Unzip filarr-sample-files.zip. You get a folder named filarr-sample-files, with the 8 folders inside.
  2. In Filarr, create the same folders with New Folder, and the subfolders inside them. If you chose the Professional starter folders during setup, Clients, Projects, Invoices & Quotes, Contracts and Archives already exist.
  3. Open a folder in Filarr and click Upload Files.
  4. In the window that opens, go to the matching folder on your computer, select all its files and confirm.
  5. Repeat for each folder that holds files.

You can also drag the files from your computer's file manager into the open folder, up to 25 at a time. Dropping a folder does not work. Add files to Filarr explains importing in detail.

Alex Morgan's notes

What is inside

Twenty notes linked to each other with [[links]]: clients, projects, meeting notes, reading notes, ideas, a trip to Lisbon, a running plan, recipes, and a note of typography flashcards. They come as Markdown files in folders, the format Obsidian uses. The French set is the same notebook, written in French.

The best place to start is the note Studio handbook (Manuel du studio in the French set). It links to the main notes, and from there you reach the rest.

Import them

  1. Unzip the file. You get a folder named Alex Morgan notes (Carnet Alex Morgan for the French set).
  2. In the sidebar, click Notes.
  3. At the top of the notes list, click the More actions button (three dots), then Import from Obsidian, Notion, Evernote....
  4. Choose Obsidian.
  1. Select the folder you unzipped, the one that contains the subfolders, then click Next.
  1. Leave Import tags and Preserve links between notes turned on. Target notebook can stay on None (root). Click Import.
  1. Filarr shows what it did: the number of notes imported, tags created and links resolved. Click Done.

Each top-level folder of the set becomes a notebook: Clients, Ideas, Learning, Meetings and so on. The few Obsidian callouts (the colored boxes) arrive as simple quotes. Import from Obsidian, Notion or Markdown covers the import wizard in full, and what changes on the way.

What to try next

  • Follow the links. Open Studio handbook, click a link, and look at the backlinks to see which notes point back. See Link your notes.
  • See the graph. In Notes, choose Graph in the view bar, or press Ctrl+Shift+G. See The graph view.
  • Review with flashcards. The note Typography flashcards holds questions and answers. Open the More actions menu of the notes list, choose Flashcards, then Generate from Notes. See Flashcards.
  • Search across both sets. If you imported the files too, search "lisbon": the photo, the travel files and the trip notes come up together.

The Meridian demo vault

What is inside

A whole knowledge base for Meridian, a fictional software company: 200 notes in Markdown, sorted into 12 folders (Start Here, Product, Engineering, Design, Research, Projects, Decisions, Meetings, Journal, People, Operations and Library). Each folder has a map note that links to everything in it, and the notes are tagged and densely linked. A folder named _Attachments holds 13 small files (tables, data samples, a diagram) that some notes refer to, and a text file explains how to import the vault.

It is made for the graph view, backlinks and search, which behave very differently with 200 connected notes than with three.

Import it

  1. Unzip filarr-demo-vault-meridian.zip. You get a folder named Meridian vault.
  2. Follow the same steps as for Alex Morgan's notes: Notes, More actions, Import from Obsidian, Notion, Evernote..., Obsidian, then select the Meridian vault folder.
  3. Keep Import tags and Preserve links between notes on, and click Import.

Each of the 12 folders becomes a notebook, and the callouts of the notes arrive as simple quotes. Start with the note Welcome to the Meridian Vault, in the Start Here notebook.

The attachments are optional. To add them, create a folder in Filarr and use Upload Files to add the files of the _Attachments folder.

What to try next

  • Open the graph with Ctrl+Shift+G and let it settle. Each folder forms its own cluster, around its map note.
  • Color it. Open Graph settings, then under Color, choose Clusters or Notebook.
  • Zoom in on one note. In Graph settings, turn on Local graph and raise Jumps to see a note and its neighbors.
