A link turns two separate notes into a path: from a client to the project, from a meeting to the decision. Filarr keeps track of links in both directions, so each note also knows which notes point to it. Over time, this web of links becomes the fastest way back to what you wrote.
Create a link
- Type
[[where you want the link. - Type the first letters of the note. Filarr suggests notes first, then files and folders of your vault.
- Press
Enterto insert the highlighted one, or click it.
The link appears as a small chip with the title of the note.
In the suggestion list:
↑and↓move through the suggestions,Esccloses the list;- if no note has that title yet, the last line offers Create note "…": Filarr creates the note and links to it;
Tabswitches between the three modes at the top: Link, Embed (show the other note inside this one, see Sub-pages and embedded notes) and Date.
You can also start a link with Link a note in the toolbar, or with the Link to note command of the / menu.
What a link can point to
| You type | The link opens |
|---|---|
[[Lumen Health]] | The note with that title |
[[Lumen Health#Contacts]] | That note, at the "Contacts" heading |
[[file:invoice.pdf]] | A file of your vault |
[[folder:Clients]] | A folder of your vault |
Titles match without regard to capitals. When you rename a note, Filarr updates the [[…]] links that point to it in your other notes.
Follow a link
- Click a link to open the note in place.
Ctrl+click it, or click it with the middle button of the mouse, to open it in a new tab.Alt+click it to place the cursor inside, to edit it.
A link to a note that does not exist yet opens This note doesn't exist yet. Click Create note to create it.
Preview a note on hover
Hover a link: a card shows the title of the note, its first lines, its number of words, its date and its number of links. You can read it without leaving the note you are in.
See what points to this note
The right panel lists the links of the open note.
- Backlinks: the other notes that link to this one, each with the sentence where the link is. Click one to open it. With none, the panel says "No other notes link here".
- Linked Items: the notes, files and folders this note links to.
- Potential Links: titles of your other notes that appear in this note's text, without a link. Link turns one mention into a link, Link all turns them all.
- Unlinked Mentions: other notes that write this note's title without linking it.
Only the [[…]] links written in the text count. A sub-page block or a note shown with Embed does not create a link, so it appears neither in Backlinks nor in the graph.
In the text itself, Filarr underlines the titles of other notes it recognizes. Click an underlined word to choose Link or Ignore.
Notes with no links
A note with no link in or out shows a small badge in the list. Hover it: it tells you the note has no connections. It is a nudge, not a problem: link it to a related note when it makes sense. The graph can show or hide these notes with Orphans.
Insert a date
Type @ in a note: the same list opens in Date mode. Choose Today, Tomorrow, a day of the week, or type a note name to link it. The date is inserted in the text, and a click on it changes it.
