Filarr can show what an archive contains without unpacking it, and it builds a ZIP for you when you download several files at once.

Look inside an archive

Filarr reads ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR, TGZ and GZ archives.

A double-click opens an archive in the application of your computer. To look inside without leaving Filarr, use the quick preview:

  1. Click in the folder, then select the archive with the arrow keys.
  2. Press Space.

The preview lists the files of the archive with their size. Click a text file in the list to read its content on the right.

Press Space again, or Esc, to close the preview. To choose once and for all how archives open on a double-click, see Open with… in Preview and open files.

What the preview does not do

  • It is read-only. Filarr does not extract the files of an archive: download the archive, then open it with your usual tool.
  • Entries that use a compression Filarr cannot read are grayed out, with the reason.
  • A 7z or RAR archive protected by a password cannot be previewed.
  • Beyond 1 GB, only ZIP archives can still be listed.

Download several files as a ZIP

  1. In a folder, select the files (tick them, or Ctrl+click them).
  2. Click Download in the selection bar.
  3. In the desktop app, choose where to save the archive. In the web app, your browser downloads it.

Filarr builds a ZIP named like filarr-3-files- followed by the date. A message follows the progress ("Archive: 2 of 3…"). Cancel stops after the current file and keeps nothing: Filarr never leaves an incomplete archive behind.

The files inside the ZIP are decrypted: anyone who gets the archive can open them. Keep it somewhere safe, or delete it once you are done.

Some files are left out, and the message at the end names them:

  • files protected by a password and not unlocked;
  • files whose content is not on this device;
  • shortcuts to a shared vault.

To download a single file, right-click it and choose Download.
