Write in comfort

Some days you need a quiet page and nothing else. Filarr can hide what surrounds the text, change how the text looks, and keep time for you while you write.

Distraction-free mode

Distraction-free mode hides the view bar, the list of notes and the toolbar, and reduces the header to one thin line with the title, the word count and the save state.

To turn it on, open a note, then:

click Focus in This note, at the right of the view bar (List view);
or press Ctrl+Shift+F;
or choose Distraction-free mode in the command palette.

The right panel stays on screen, unless Note panels on hover is on (see below). Close the Version History panel yourself if it is open: distraction-free mode leaves it in place.

To come back, click Leave distraction-free mode at the top of the page, or press Ctrl+Shift+F again.

Distraction-free mode only works in the notes. Elsewhere, the shortcut tells you so.

Editor themes

The Editor theme list, at the end of the toolbar, gives the page a style in one click:

Default;
Writer: a serif font, a warm background and a narrower column, for long texts;
Developer: a monospaced font.

Page options

Click … at the top right of the note header (Page options) for the settings you change most:

Font: Default, Serif or Mono;
Small text: a smaller font size;
Full width: the text uses the whole width of the window;
Publish to web…: turns the note into a web page, with a cloud account (see Publish a note as a web page);
Advanced style settings…: opens the Style Settings window.

These settings change how Filarr shows every note, on this device. They do not change the notes themselves.

Style settings

Style Settings (the gear at the end of the toolbar, or Advanced style settings…) adjusts the look in detail, with a Preview on the right.

The buttons at the top apply a ready-made style: Default, Writer, Developer, Compact or Reading.
Typography: Font family, Font size, Line height and Heading scale.
Colors: Accent color, Background and Text color. Each one follows the theme of Filarr until you pick a color.
Spacing: Content max width sets how wide the column of text can grow.
Reset to defaults puts everything back.

Editor padding, Show line numbers and Typewriter mode do not change the page for now. Neither do Line numbers and Typewriter mode in Page options.

More room around the text

The arrow at the top right of the note header folds it (Collapse header).
The arrow at the right end of the toolbar hides it (Hide toolbar).
The buttons at the top corners of the page hide or show the list of notes and the right panel. Use them rather than Ctrl+B, which opens or closes the sidebar of the app.
In Settings → Appearance, Note panels on hover keeps the side panels out of the way: they slide in when you move the pointer to the edge of the page.

Time your writing

The Focus timer, in the top bar, times work sessions: 25 minutes of focus, then a 5 minute break, and a 15 minute break after 4 sessions. Click Start, and change the durations in its settings.
