Filarr works without a connection on your computer. In the browser, keep folders offline and know what waits for the network.

Filarr is built to work without a network. On your computer, everything is already there. In the browser, you choose what to keep for offline use.

In the desktop app

Your files, notes and profiles are stored on your computer. Without a connection, you keep working exactly as usual: open, edit, import, organize.

  • The tooltip of the sync icon, in the header, reads Offline.
  • Your changes wait on your computer. Filarr sends them as soon as the connection is back, with nothing for you to do.
  • If the same file or note also changed on another device in the meantime, Filarr keeps both versions. See Sync conflicts.

What needs a connection: shared vaults (their content lives online), share links, publishing a page, invitations and anything else that involves other people.

In the web app

The web app at app.filarr.com keeps working when the network drops.

  • After a first visit, it opens even without a connection.
  • A banner starting with Offline tells you that your changes will sync when the network is back.
  • Your notes and your folder list are kept in the browser. You can read and edit your notes offline.
  • File contents come from the cloud when you open them. To have a folder's files without a connection, keep that folder offline.

Keep a folder offline

  1. Open the folder that contains it.
  2. Right-click the folder you want to keep.
  3. Choose Keep offline.

The entry is only offered on a folder shown inside another folder. It is not in the menu of the folder cards on the home screen, on the Folders page or in the sidebar. For a top-level folder, keep its subfolders offline: the files placed directly in it are not kept.

Filarr downloads the folder's files into this browser. To undo it, right-click the folder again and choose Stop keeping offline.

See what the browser keeps

With a profile linked to an account, go to Settings → Account & Sync. The Offline card shows:

  • how many folders you keep offline;
  • how much space Filarr uses in this browser (notes and opened files included), out of what the browser makes available;
  • a warning when the browser may clear this data if it runs out of space.

Browser limits

  • The browser decides how much space Filarr gets, and it may clear this data when it runs short.
  • What you keep offline stays in this browser only. Another browser, or another computer, doesn't have it.
  • Clearing the site's data erases it. For a local profile in the browser (no account), it erases everything: Filarr reminds you with a banner and a Turn on sync button.

Shared vault notes offline

This part applies to the desktop app and the web app alike. A shared vault note is saved in the vault, online, and nowhere else.

If the connection drops while you edit one, Filarr tells you that you are offline and that your text will be saved as soon as the connection is back. Your text stays in the open note, and Filarr retries on its own.
