Help sections
The Atelier is where you make visuals: social posts, stories, posters, presentations, thumbnails, whiteboards. Each design is a .fdesign file in your space, encrypted and synced like your other files. The ones the Atelier creates go into an Atelier folder at the root.
Open Atelier in the sidebar, under Tools.
Create a design
Three ways to start:
- Start from a format: one click on Instagram post, Story, Presentation 16:9, A3 poster, A4 portrait, YouTube thumbnail or Whiteboard creates a blank design in that format. All formats offers more, plus a custom size in pixels or millimetres.
- Create a design: the same choice of formats, in a window.
- Import a file: a PDF, a PowerPoint presentation (
.pptx), a Photoshop file (.psd) or an SVG becomes an editable design. Anything Filarr could not carry over exactly is listed after the import.
My designs then gathers your designs, newest first, wherever they are in your space.
Start from a template
The Templates section offers more than a hundred designs ready to edit, sorted by category. Click a template to open its preview: all its pages, its format and its size.
- Create with all N pages creates a design with the whole template.
- Create with page N only keeps only the page on display: click another page in the strip first to choose it.
- The star adds the template to your Favorites, a filter of the list.
In the editor, the Templates panel offers the same templates. Its button then adds the pages to the open design, and your latest templates show at the top, under Recently used.
You can also save your own templates and use the ones others share: see My templates and shared designs.
The editor
- On the left, the panels: Templates, Elements (shapes, lines, icons, charts, QR code), Text, Uploads (your images, or an image already in Filarr), Brand (your brand kits), Draw, Retouch, Layers, Comments and Check (what would get in the way of an export or a print).
- On the right, the inspector sets whatever is selected: position, colours, text, effects, or the page when nothing is selected.
- At the bottom, the pages of the design: add, duplicate, reorder.
A panel item is placed with one click or dragged onto the page. Every action undoes with Ctrl+Z. Shortcuts are listed in the editor (?).
Text styles
A text style ("Title", "Body"…) is set once and applies everywhere in the design. In the Text panel, Create styles from this design builds them from the texts that already repeat, or Create a style from this text starts from the selected text.
In a text's inspector, the Style menu links the text to a style. If you then change that text, the inspector says so: Update style carries the change to every text with the same style, Revert to style undoes it.
Find and replace
Ctrl+H opens the Find and replace bar: on the page or on All pages, speaker notes included, with Match case and Whole word. Pages that contain a result carry a counter.
Align and space
While you move an element, guides show when it lines up with another one or with the page, and when the gaps between three elements become equal. In the page inspector, Layout grid sets columns, gutters and margins; Shift+G shows or hides the guides.
QR code
Elements › QR code creates a vector code from a link or some text, in the colour and damage tolerance of your choice. It stays sharp at every size, print included.
Retouch
The Retouch panel removes a plain background, enlarges an image, reads the text in an image and extracts its colours. It all happens on your device: your images don't leave it.
Present
Present starts the slideshow. In the desktop app, with two screens, the slide goes full screen on the other screen and the presenter view stays in front of you: next page, notes, elapsed time. On the web, the slide opens in a separate window, which F makes full screen.
While presenting:
| key | effect |
|---|---|
arrows, Space | next or previous page |
L | laser pointer |
D | pen that fades |
B | black screen for the audience |
Esc | leave the presentation |
Export
Export offers: PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG, standard PDF, print PDF (bleed, crop marks, CMYK colours), PowerPoint (text and shapes stay editable), animated GIF, MP4 video and the .fdesign source design. Rendering and encoding happen on your device.
Brand kits
A brand kit keeps your colours, fonts and logos. Create one from Brand kits › New kit on the Atelier page; it then shows up in the Brand panel of every design.
