Add files to Filarr

Bring files from your computer into a folder with Upload Files or drag and drop, follow the progress and know what happens to names and originals.

Filarr keeps your files in folders, encrypted on your device. To bring a file in, you open a folder and add the file from your computer. Filarr encrypts it as it arrives.

A file always lives inside a folder. If you have no folder yet, create one first: see Organize files in folders.

Upload files with the button

  1. Open the folder that should receive the files.
  2. Click Upload Files at the top of the folder.
  3. Pick one or more files in the window that opens, then confirm.

Filarr imports the files one after the other. When it is done, a message such as "3 files imported" appears in the top-right corner, and the files show up in the folder.

You can also right-click an empty spot in the folder and choose Add files…. It opens the same window.

Drag and drop from your computer

  1. Open the folder in Filarr.
  2. Drag files from your file explorer onto the folder window.
  3. Release them when Drag and drop files here appears.

A single drop takes up to 25 files. For more, drop them in several goes, or use Upload Files, which has no such limit.

Follow a long import

When you import several files, a message in the corner follows the progress, for example "Importing 3 of 12". Click Stop to end the import after the current file. The files already imported stay in the folder.

A large file also opens a window with a progress bar:

  • Continue in the background hides the window while the import goes on;
  • Stop after this file ends the batch once the current file is done.

At the end, a message says how many files arrived and names those that could not be imported.

When a name is already taken

Two files cannot share a name in the same folder, trash included. If you import invoice.pdf into a folder that already has one, Filarr keeps both: the new file gets a free name such as invoice (1).pdf. The message at the end tells you how many files were renamed.

What happens to the original

By default, Filarr copies the file. The original stays on your computer, unencrypted, where it was. If you would rather keep only the encrypted copy, open Settings → Desktop protection and change Default import behavior:

  • Copy keeps the original. This is the default.
  • Move to vault deletes the original once Filarr has checked the encrypted copy.

Large files

In the desktop app, Filarr encrypts a large file straight from your disk. One case is refused: a file over 500 MB that does not come from a file on your disk, such as an attachment dragged from another application. Save it to your disk first, then import it.

In the web app, a file cannot exceed 500 MB.
