Keyboard shortcuts

Every keyboard shortcut in Filarr, grouped by where you use it: everywhere, in folders, in previews, in notes, on the Tasks page.

This page lists every keyboard shortcut in Filarr, grouped by the place where it works. Press F1 at any time to open the Keyboard shortcuts window, which shows the main ones.

How shortcuts behave

  • A shortcut only acts where it makes sense. Del, F2 and Ctrl+A work on files in an open folder. In a text field or a note, editing keys keep their usual role (select text, copy, undo).
  • While you type, most shortcuts stay silent. Combinations with Ctrl+Shift still work, and so do Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9.
  • In the web app, a few shortcuts change because the browser keeps those keys for itself. The Web app column below shows the key to use there. Every other shortcut is the same on the desktop and on the web.

Everywhere in Filarr

Open and find

ActionDesktop appWeb app
Open the command paletteCtrl+PSame
Quick search (opens the same palette)Ctrl+KSame
Open SettingsCtrl+,Same
Show the keyboard shortcutsF1Same
Refresh the windowF5Same
Open favorite 1 to 9Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9Alt+1 to Alt+9

A favorite gets its number when you right-click it in the sidebar and choose Assign a shortcut (Ctrl+1-9). A number with no favorite shows a short message telling you how to assign one.

Create

ActionDesktop appWeb app
New file (in the open folder)Ctrl+NAlt+N
New folderCtrl+Alt+NSame
New noteCtrl+Shift+NAlt+Shift+N
Open today's daily note (created if needed)Ctrl+Shift+DSame

New file needs an open folder. Outside a folder, Filarr asks you to open one first. New note opens the template picker, and the note only exists once you choose a template or a blank note.

Move around

ActionDesktop appWeb app
Back to the previous screen of the tabAlt+LeftSame
Forward again in the tabAlt+RightSame
Parent folder (in an open folder)Alt+UpSame
HomeAlt+HomeSame

Each tab keeps its own history: Alt+Left never takes you into another tab. The back button of a folder also returns to the previous screen of the tab, or to the parent folder when the tab opened on this folder. Its tooltip names the screen it returns to.

Display

ActionDesktop appWeb app
Show or hide the sidebarCtrl+BSame
Switch between grid view and list viewCtrl+Shift+VSame
Cycle the bars displayCtrl+Shift+BSame
Distraction-free mode (notes only)Ctrl+Shift+FSame

Ctrl+Shift+B goes through the modes in this order: All bars, Floating bar, Side rail, Top bar on hover, Tabs only, Search only, No bars. A short message names the mode you reach, which helps when every bar has disappeared.

Ctrl+C and Ctrl+X do not use the clipboard: they open a window where you pick the destination folder. In the desktop app, you can also hold Alt while you drag a file out of Filarr to copy it to your computer.

Change a shortcut

Filarr does not let you change its shortcuts from the interface: the Keyboard shortcuts window is a read-only list.

The only exception is the two system-wide shortcuts of the desktop app:

  1. Open Settings → Desktop protection.
  2. Under Global keyboard shortcuts, click Edit next to the shortcut.
  3. Press the new key combination.

The new combination takes effect the next time Filarr starts. If another application already uses it, Filarr asks you to pick a different one.
