Write questions and answers in your notes, turn them into a deck of flashcards, and review them at the right time with spaced repetition.

Flashcards help you remember what you read: a question on the front, the answer on the back. In Filarr, you write them right in your notes, as you take them. Filarr gathers them into a deck and brings each card back when you are about to forget it.

Write the cards in your notes

In any note, write the question on one line and the answer on the next line:

Q: What is leading?
A: The vertical space between lines of text.

A shorter form works too, with a space after ? and !:

? What is kerning?
! The space between two letters.

Rules to know:

  • The answer goes on the line right after the question. Empty lines between the two do not matter.
  • Q: and A: can be written in capitals or not, with or without a space before the colon.
  • Write A: for the answer, whatever your language: Filarr does not recognize R:.
  • One card per pair: put as many pairs as you want in a note, and in as many notes as you want.

Build your deck

  1. Open the More actions menu (…) at the top of the list of notes, then Flashcards.
  2. Click Generate from Notes.

Filarr reads all your notes and puts every pair it finds into a deck named "Auto-generated". The number at the top right tells you how many cards are due now.

When you add or change pairs in your notes, click + Generate from Notes again, at the bottom of the window. Filarr adds the new cards, removes those that are gone from your notes, and keeps where you are with the others. A card whose question you reworded starts over.

If Filarr finds no pair, it tells you how to write them.

Review

  1. Read the question and try to answer in your head.
  2. Press Space or Enter, or click the card, to see the answer.
  1. Say how well you knew it, with a button or with the keys 1 to 4:
    • Again (1): you did not know;
    • Hard (2): you got it wrong, or only just;
    • Good (3): you knew it, with some effort;
    • Easy (4): you knew it right away.

The next card follows. When none is left, Filarr says "All cards reviewed! Come back later." The × at the top right closes the window.

When cards come back

Filarr schedules each card with spaced repetition:

  • after Again or Hard, the card starts over and comes back one day later;
  • after Good or Easy, the gaps grow: one day, then six days, then longer and longer. Easy makes them grow faster.

A few minutes a day are enough: review the cards that are due, and let Filarr handle the rest.
