Is the free plan really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Notes, files, graph, canvas and encryption are free forever. Cloud sync is included too: 5 GB, free, with no time limit and no card. Solo (€4/mo) and Pro (€8/mo) add shared vaults and real-time collaborative editing, the advanced protections (hardware key, hidden vault, wipe-on-duress), more generous sends, the option to use your own storage — and more storage and devices.

How does cloud sync work?

Your files are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before upload. Only encrypted blobs are stored on our servers (Cloudflare R2). A copy of your master key — itself encrypted by your password (PBKDF2-SHA-512, 600,000 iterations) — is also stored so you can log in from a new device, but we never see your password and cannot unwrap it. We cannot read your files. It’s not a policy, it’s a property of the architecture.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Each file is encrypted with a random FEK (File Encryption Key), itself protected by a master key derived from your password via PBKDF2-SHA-512 with 600,000 iterations. Your password never leaves your device. Even with full server access, your files are unreadable — the stored key copy is ciphertext that no one can unwrap without your password.

Can I use Filarr for sensitive data?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AES-256-GCM encryption and multi-profile isolation are designed for sensitive data (legal, medical, financial). Your data stays encrypted on your machine and on our servers.

What happens if I lose my password?

Accepted Answer

Use your recovery phrase or recovery key file (exportable from Settings > Security). If you’ve lost both, there is no recovery — that’s the cost of end-to-end encryption. We only hold encrypted copies of your keys, unusable without your password; we can’t restore anything for you. We recommend a password manager.

Can I use Filarr on multiple devices?

Yes. The free plan allows 3 devices, Solo 7, Pro 10; team plans are unlimited. Mind what counts: a slot is an install session, not a machine — the desktop app and the website on the same computer take two, because a browser cannot read the desktop install’s identity. At 3 slots, desktop + web + phone all fit. Devices are paired securely using ECDH key exchange — your encryption key is transferred without ever being exposed in plaintext.

Can several of us work on the same documents?

Yes. End-to-end encrypted shared vaults are included in every paid plan: you create a vault, invite whoever you want, and work in it together with roles (admin, editor, viewer), an activity feed, comments and a trash. Two people can edit the same note at the same time, and the server only relays bytes it cannot decrypt. Solo opens your space to 3 people, Pro to 6. For a team, the Teams tab on this page sells Teams — €11/seat/month, minimum 3 seats, viewers free — with an admin console, per-seat billing and an audit log, and Enterprise from 25 seats.

Does Filarr support two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Accepted Answer

Yes, optional from Settings > Security inside the app. We use standard TOTP (RFC 6238) — compatible with Authy, Google Authenticator, 1Password, Bitwarden, and any other TOTP app. At activation, 8 single-use backup codes are generated so you aren't locked out if you lose your device. 2FA protects your login to the account; it does not replace your encryption password, which remains the only key to decrypt your files.

Is Filarr open source?

The code is public, but the accurate term is “source available”. The desktop client is published on GitHub (github.com/matbel91765/filarr) under Business Source License 1.1: you can read every line, verify the cryptographic claims, build the binary and propose fixes — but the BSL restricts some production uses until its Change Date, April 19, 2030, when it automatically switches to Apache 2.0. The OSI does not recognize such licenses as open source during that period, and we would rather say so than leave it vague. The cloud backend and billing modules remain hosted services. An independent security audit is planned.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, anytime. Your local files are not affected. Cloud data remains accessible for download for 30 days after cancellation, then is deleted.
