Is the free plan really free?

Yes. All local features are free forever — notes, files, graph, canvas, encryption. Cloud sync includes a 30-day free trial (1 GB). After that, you can upgrade to Solo (€4/mo) or Pro (€8/mo) for more storage and devices.

How does cloud sync work?

Accepted Answer

Your files are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before upload. Only encrypted blobs are stored on our servers (Cloudflare R2, EU). A copy of your master key — itself encrypted by your password (PBKDF2-SHA-512, 600,000 iterations) — is also stored so you can log in from a new device, but we never see your password and cannot unwrap it. We cannot read your files. It’s not a policy, it’s a property of the architecture.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Each file is encrypted with a random FEK (File Encryption Key), itself protected by a master key derived from your password via PBKDF2-SHA-512 with 600,000 iterations. Your password never leaves your device. Even with full server access, your files are unreadable — the stored key copy is ciphertext that no one can unwrap without your password.

Can I use Filarr for sensitive data?

Yes. AES-256-GCM encryption and multi-profile isolation are designed for sensitive data (legal, medical, financial). Your data stays encrypted on your machine and on our servers.

What happens if I lose my password?

Accepted Answer

Use your recovery phrase or recovery key file (exportable from Settings > Security). If you’ve lost both, there is no recovery — that’s the cost of end-to-end encryption. We only hold encrypted copies of your keys, unusable without your password; we can’t restore anything for you. We recommend a password manager.

Can I use Filarr on multiple devices?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Solo plan supports up to 3 devices, Pro is unlimited. Devices are paired securely using ECDH key exchange — your encryption key is transferred without ever being exposed in plaintext.

Does Filarr support two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Accepted Answer

Yes, optional from Settings > Security inside the app. We use standard TOTP (RFC 6238) — compatible with Authy, Google Authenticator, 1Password, Bitwarden, and any other TOTP app. At activation, 8 single-use backup codes are generated so you aren't locked out if you lose your device. 2FA protects your login to the account; it does not replace your encryption password, which remains the only key to decrypt your files.

Is Filarr open source?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The desktop client is published on GitHub under Business Source License 1.1 (github.com/matbel91765/filarr) — you can read the code, verify the cryptographic claims, propose fixes. The cloud backend and billing modules stay as hosted services. An independent security audit is on the roadmap.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Accepted Answer

Yes, anytime. Your local files are not affected. Cloud data remains accessible for download for 30 days after cancellation, then is deleted.
