Tags, favorites and recent files

Tag files to find them across folders, filter a folder by tag, keep favorites one click or one key away, and get back to what you opened lately.

Folders put each file in one place. Tags cross those borders: an invoice can be in the folder of its client and still carry the tag "unpaid". Favorites keep the files and folders you use most one click, or one key, away. Recent files bring back what you opened lately.

Add a tag to a file

  1. Click the file to open its Details panel. You can also right-click it and choose View details.
  2. Under Tags, click Add a tag….
  3. Type the name of the tag.
  1. For a new tag, press Enter or click Create "Unpaid" (with your tag name). Filarr creates the tag and adds it to the file.
  2. For a tag that already exists, click it in the list under the field. Enter does not add an existing tag: with only part of the name typed, it would even create a new tag.

To take a tag off a file, click the cross next to the tag in the Details panel.

Tags can also arrive on their own: an automation rule can add one, and a watched folder can tag what it imports.

Filter a folder by tag

When some files of a folder carry tags, chips appear at the top of the folder, with the number of files for each tag. The tag also shows on each file card. The chips write tag names in lowercase ("Unpaid" becomes #unpaid), and after a restart the cards may do the same.

Click a chip to show only the files with that tag. Click All to see everything again.

Other ways to use your tags:

  • type #unpaid in the search box of the folder;
  • search for the tag name in the search box at the top of the window: files with that tag come up;
  • build a smart collection that gathers every file with a tag, whatever its folder: see Collections and smart collections.

Favorites

To add a file or a folder to your favorites, right-click it and choose Add to favorites. With several items selected, the selection bar has the same button.

Your favorites appear in the Favorites section of the sidebar. Click one to open it: a favorite file opens the file itself, not only its folder. Drag favorites up or down to change their order.

To remove one, right-click it in the sidebar and choose Remove from favorites.

Give a favorite a keyboard shortcut

  1. Open the sidebar with the menu button at the top left, or Ctrl+B.
  2. Right-click the favorite, then choose Assign a shortcut (Ctrl+1-9).
  3. A small field appears next to it. Type a digit from 1 to 9. The digit is enough: do not press Enter.

The shortcut now shows next to the favorite. Press Ctrl+1 (or the digit you chose) from anywhere in Filarr to open it. In the web app, the shortcuts are Alt+1 to Alt+9.

To remove the shortcut, choose Assign a shortcut (Ctrl+1-9) again and press Esc in the field.

Recent files

The Recent files section of the sidebar lists the files you opened lately.

  • The bin icon next to the title, Clear recent, empties the list.
  • Right-click a file in the list, then Remove from recent, to take out only that one.

The command palette (Ctrl+K) also shows your latest items, see Find anything.
