A template is a ready-made page: the headings, lists and tables you would otherwise type again for every meeting or every project. Filarr comes with 19 templates, and you can turn any note into a template of your own.

Start a note from a template

When you create a note (the + button or Ctrl+Shift+N), it opens right away, blank, with the cursor in the title. Under the first line, Filarr suggests a few templates: Start with: Meeting notes, Project brief, Daily note and All templates…. If you made templates of your own, the most recent one comes first.

  • Click a template: the note fills in and takes the name of the template as its title.
  • Click All templates… to open the Start from a template window. Type in Search templates... to find one, then click it.
  • Start typing, in the title or in the body: the suggestions go away.
  • Don’t suggest again silences them for good. You can bring them back from the template manager, see below.

The suggestions appear in any empty note, such as a new sub-page, and never in a read-only note. A daily note gets the date as its title, so it doesn't offer them. The Daily note template gives its name to the note you apply it to; it isn't a daily note. See Write your first note.

Add a template to a note you already wrote

The catalog stays one step away from any note:

  • in the note's ··· menu, Insert a template… adds the template at the end of the note;
  • in the body, type / then choose Template: the template is inserted where you typed.

In an empty note, the template fills it. In a note that already has text, it is added without erasing anything, and the title doesn't change. In a shared vault note, templates aren't offered: they come from your personal notes.

The template manager

To browse the templates, open the More actions menu (…) at the top of the list of notes, then Templates.

  1. Click a template on the left to preview it on the right.
  2. Click Use Template to create a note from it.

The preview also lists the Variables: the template fills in by itself (see below).

Suggest templates in a blank note controls the suggestions shown in an empty note. Untick it to stop seeing them; tick it to bring them back after a Don’t suggest again.

Make your own template

  1. Write a note the way you want your template to look.
  2. With the note open, click Save as Template at the bottom of the list of notes. You can also right-click the note in the list and choose Save as Template.

The template takes the title of the note as its name, and "Created from" the note as its description. It appears under Custom in the template manager and in the All templates… window, and your most recent template is suggested first in an empty note.

To delete one of your templates, open the template manager, find it under Custom, and click its bin (Delete). Built-in templates cannot be deleted.

Variables

Two words between double braces are replaced when you use a template:

Write in the templateBecomes
{{title}}The title of the new note, which is the name of the template
{{date}}Today's date, in the short format of your language

For example, a template with the line "Meeting of {{date}}" gives "Meeting of 9/24/2026" in English.
