Filarr's window has three parts: the header at the top, the sidebar on the left, and the page you are working on, in tabs. This article names each part and what it does, so the rest of this help makes sense.
The screen at a glance
- The header, at the top: the menu button, Filarr, your tabs, search and your avatar. With a cloud account, it also shows the inbox and the sync status.
- The sidebar, on the left: the pages of Filarr, your pinned items, your folder tree and, at the bottom, the trash, settings, help and the space your files take.
- The page, next to the sidebar, in a tab.
The header
From left to right:
- The menu button collapses or expands the sidebar (see below).
- Filarr, followed by the name of your organization when you work in its space.
- Your tabs, when the window is at least 840 px wide, is not split in two and keeps the All bars display. Otherwise they show above the page.
- Search. One box for everything: files, folders, notes and settings pages. Type a word and the results appear below. The shortcut written in the box (
Ctrl+Shift+Kby default) puts the cursor there from anywhere. - The inbox and the sync status, with a cloud account. Click the sync status to open Sync activity.
- The theme button switches from your light theme to your dark theme, and back.
- Your avatar opens the profile menu.
The profile menu holds Lock (when your profile can be locked), Profile, Switch profile and your other profiles, then the Focus timer, the switch to the light or dark theme, Density and Settings. With the keyboard, open it with Enter and move through it with the arrow keys.
On a window narrower than 840 px, the theme button folds into the profile menu, and the search shortcut is no longer written.
The sidebar
The sidebar sits next to the page and never covers it. Its shape depends on the width of the window:
| Window width | The sidebar |
|---|---|
| 1200 px and wider | Docked, with names and counts. The menu button or Ctrl+Alt+B collapses it into a rail, and Filarr remembers this choice on this device. |
| 840 to 1199 px | Rail: a column of icons. Hover an icon to read its name. The menu button or Ctrl+Alt+B opens the full sidebar over the page. |
| Narrower than 840 px | Drawer: closed, it takes no room. The menu button or Ctrl+Alt+B opens it over the page, behind a shade. |
When it is open over the page, the sidebar closes with Esc, with its Close navigation button, with a click outside, or as soon as you choose an entry. While it is open, Tab stays inside the sidebar.
From top to bottom, you find:
- Home, Folders, Notes, Tasks and Reminders. Folders shows how many folders you have, subfolders included, Notes how many notes, Tasks how many tasks are overdue or due today, and Reminders how many reminders are overdue.
- Tools: Notes board, Collections, Timeline, Automation and Shares. With a cloud account, the Marketplace joins them, and Organization when your role opens the console.
- Pinned: the files and folders you marked as favorites, each folder with its color. Right-click one and choose Assign a shortcut (Ctrl+1-9) to open it with a key.
- Folders: your folder tree. Click the arrow next to a folder to see its subfolders, and click a folder to open it. A right-click opens the same menu as on the Folders page. The + creates a folder. Below the tree, To tidy shows how many files wait to be put away. See Tidy up with "To tidy".
- Recent: what you opened last.
- At the bottom, Trash, Settings and Help, then the space your files take. With a cloud account whose quota is known, a gauge shows that quota. Click the space used to see a map of your storage.
Click the Pinned, Folders and Recent headings to fold their lists. A middle click on an entry opens it in a new tab.
Tabs and split view
Each page opens in a tab. Filarr remembers your tabs for each profile.
Ctrl+Topens a new tab,Ctrl+Wcloses the current one.Ctrl+TabandCtrl+Shift+Tabmove to the next and previous tab.- When a tab has the focus, the arrow keys move between tabs,
Enteropens the one you are on,Deletecloses it andShift+F10opens its menu. - Right-click a tab for Close tab, Close others, Split right and Move to other panel.
To see two pages side by side, drag a tab to the left or right edge of the window. Drop it when Open on the left or Open on the right appears. Each panel then has its tabs above its page. Drag the divider between the two panels to resize them, and double-click it to merge them back. Ctrl+\ moves between the two panels.
The home screen
Home is where Filarr opens. By default it is Starting point: the greeting with New note, Import, New Folder and Search, then Pick up where you left off, Recent, What’s waiting, Space and your Pinned folders. It is a grid of blocks: you can rearrange it, add or remove blocks and pick another layout with Customise home, at the bottom of the page. See Customize your home.
The command palette
The command palette finds files and runs commands without the mouse. Press Ctrl+P, then type a few letters.
Results are grouped into Files, Actions, Settings, Navigation and Recent. When a command shows a shortcut on the right, that shortcut runs it directly next time. Use the arrow keys to choose, Enter to run and Esc to close. Commands that cannot run on the current page are not listed.
While you type in a note, Ctrl+P opens a quick switcher to jump between notes instead. When the header is hidden, the search shortcut opens the palette.
Density
Density is set in the profile menu: click your avatar, then Comfortable, Compact or Dense. A check mark shows the current density. Choose Dense to see more lines at once, Comfortable for more space around each item.
Replay the interface tour
Filarr shows a short tour after the first setup. To see it again:
- Open Settings (
Ctrl+,). - Choose About.
- Next to Interface tour, click Relaunch.
Filarr returns to the home screen and starts the tour again. It highlights ten areas in turn: the sidebar, search, creating folders, notes, collections, automation, the trash, the theme, your profile and the settings.
