Folders hold your files. You can nest them as deep as you like, move files between them by dragging, give each folder a color and an emoji, and choose how its content is shown.
Create a folder
- Open the folder where the new one should go.
- Click New at the top right, then Folder.
- Type a name under Folder name. Check Location, and change it if needed.
- Click Create.
If a folder already has that name in that location, the window says so while you type, grays out Create and suggests a free name ("Projects (2)").
The New menu also creates a Note stored in this folder, a laid-out document (when an editor plugin is installed), and imports files or a whole folder from your computer (Import files…, Import a folder…). The Upload Files button next to it stays the main action.
Other ways to create a folder:
- press
Ctrl+Alt+N; - click + next to Folders in the sidebar;
- right-click an empty spot in a folder, then New folder;
- on the home page, click New above your folders.
Open, rename and delete
Click a folder to open it. Its name shows as the title, in its color, with what it holds: "2 folders · 5 items · 124.5 KB, subfolders included". These are the same figures as on the Folders page.
Above the title, the path starts at Folders and leads to any parent folder. When space runs short, the folders in the middle fold under …: click it to see them. The back arrow returns to the screen you came from in this tab: hover it to see where it leads. Alt+Left and Alt+Right go back and forward in the history of the tab, and Alt+Up goes up one level.
- Rename: right-click, then Rename, or
F2on the current item. - Move to trash: right-click, then Move to trash, or press
Del. The folder goes to the trash at once with what it holds, including the notes stored in it and in its subfolders; a message says how many items it takes along and offers Undo for ten seconds, which brings these notes back too. See Trash and restore.
The item menu
A right-click on a file, a note or a folder opens the same menu, like the ⋯ button of a card, of the inspector and of the preview. It keeps the same order everywhere: in a folder, on the home page, in the sidebar and on the Folders page.
- Open (
Enter), Preview - Rename (
F2), Move to… (Ctrl+M), Duplicate (Ctrl+D) - Share…, Copy link
- Pin, Tags…
- Details (
I), Versions - Move to trash (
Del), always last, in red
An entry that never applies to that kind of item is left out: a folder has no preview, no tags and no versions, and is shared by joining a shared vault; a note is renamed from its title and shared from the note. An entry that does not apply here and now stays grayed out with its reason: sharing needs a synced profile, a locked file can't be downloaded… The item's own actions (Open with…, Copy to…, Download, Add Reminder, Color & icon, Password-protect…) follow the common entries of their group.
Copy link copies a link your notes understand ([[file:quote.pdf]], [[folder:Photos]]): paste it into a note. Duplicate makes a copy next to the original ("quote (Copie).pdf").
Move files and folders
Drag and drop
Drag a file or a folder onto a folder card. The card lights up. If you keep hovering, the folder opens ("Opening…") so you can go deeper before you let go.
You can also drop items on a part of the path at the top of the page, or on the back arrow, to send them to a parent folder.
With the Move window
- Select the items to move (see below).
- Click Move in the selection bar.
- Pick the destination in the tree. Search a folder... finds it by name, and New folder here creates one on the spot.
- Click Move.
Copy works the same way and leaves the originals in place. The right-click menu of an item offers Move and Copy too. Ctrl+X and Ctrl+C open these same windows: they do not use the clipboard.
A folder cannot go into itself or into one of its own subfolders.
Select several items
- tick the box that appears on a card when you point at it;
- with the keyboard, reach an item with the arrow keys and press
Space; Ctrl+click orShift+click;- draw a box with the mouse on an empty area;
- press
Ctrl+Ato select everything.
A bar then appears at the bottom of the view, without hiding anything: Select all, Move to…, Copy to…, Download, Pin, Move to trash, and a cross to clear the selection. A selected note goes to the trash with the rest, but does not move from here. To send an item to a shared vault, right-click it and choose Add to shared vault….
Download with several files builds a ZIP archive, see ZIP files and other archives. In the web app, the bar also offers Make available offline.
With the keyboard
One tab stop goes into the subfolders, another into the files and notes: each group has a single stop. The arrow keys move from item to item, row by row in a grid; Enter opens, Space checks or unchecks, Shift+F10 opens the item menu. See Keyboard shortcuts.
Grid or list
Subfolders show as a band at the top, with what each one holds. Below, the files and notes of the folder form a single collection: a note sorts and filters along with the files.
The toggle at the right of the toolbar switches between a grid of cards and a list. Ctrl+Shift+V does the same. When the folder holds images, the button next to it opens the Gallery.
Each card shows the whole name (on two lines when needed), a type badge ("PDF", "NOTE") and the size of the file. The list adds the Type, Size and Modified columns; click a column header to sort by it.
Filter by type
The chips at the top of the folder (All, Notes, Photos, Videos, Documents, Spreadsheets…) show one type at a time; click again to go back to All. Each type has its color, the same as its badge. The #tag chips that follow filter by tag.
The inspector
The button at the right of the title (or the I key) opens the inspector. It shows the current item, or the folder itself, with its preview (the photo, the first page of a PDF), Open, Download and the ⋯ menu, then three tabs: Info (type, size, dates, location, storage, tags), Versions and Access. It stays open from one folder to the next. A click on a file shows it there; a double-click opens it.
Sort and group
Click Sort by to sort by Name, Date modified, Size or Type. The arrow next to it flips the order.
Click Group to gather items under headings: None, Type (Notes, Photos, Documents… the words of the chips), Date modified or First letter.
The search field at the left of the toolbar filters the folder by name. Type # followed by a tag to see only the files with that tag, see Tags, favorites and recent files.
Color and icon
- Right-click the folder, then Color & icon.
- Pick one of the twelve colors of the palette, the same everywhere in Filarr and adapted to the theme. Theme color, the first one, gives the folder back its default color; + gives it a color of your own.
- Pick an emoji under Icon (emoji). The search field helps you find one.
- Click Apply.
Customize a folder's page
Inside a folder, the Folder options button (three dots, top right) goes further:
- Add an icon or a cover decorates the top of the folder;
- Add a description pins a welcome note at the top, to say what the folder is for;
- Edit the block band adds a band of blocks above the files: Recent in this folder, Pinned subfolders, Storage for this folder, Members and sharing, Folder tasks, Activity;
- Same as everywhere, Same as the parent folder and Specific to this folder decide where these choices come from;
- Display settings specific to this folder keeps a view and a sort for this folder alone.
