Choose what the list shows (folders, sub-pages, tags), pin, sort, set the density, search, act on several notes at once, and use the notes trash.

Links already tie your notes together. The list adds a second way in: one place to file notes, folders, with sub-pages to nest them and tags to sort across. This article covers everything that happens in the list of notes.
Choose what the list shows
The title at the top of the list says what you are looking at: All Notes to start with. Click it to choose another scope:
- All Notes, Unfiled (the notes attached to no folder, daily notes aside) and Shared (the notes placed in a shared vault);
- Folders: a folder of your files, with its subfolders and their sub-pages;
- Sub-pages of: a note and every page filed under it;
- Tags: the notes that carry this tag;
- Notebooks: your existing notebooks, if you have any;
- at the bottom, Trash, Conflicts to resolve (see Sync conflicts) and Ghost notes, only when there is something to deal with.
The number to the right of each entry counts its notes. When the list of scopes is long, type in the field at the top to find a folder or a tag.
A note created with + (New Note) is born in the scope on screen: in the chosen folder, as a sub-page of the chosen note, or with the chosen tag.
Read the list
Each note shows its title on two lines, the start of its text, the time or date it was last modified, its number of words and links, and its folder when the scope does not already say it.
Sorted by date, the list is grouped by period: Pinned first, then Today, Yesterday, This week, This month and Older.
A note only shows a status when it calls for action:
- Conflict: the note changed elsewhere, open Conflicts to resolve to compare;
- Failed: saving failed, open the note to try again;
- Waiting: the note is not sent yet, there is no connection.
A note without links shows nothing special in the list: the Links tab of the inspector says it, see Link your notes.
Pin a note
Hover a note in the list and click the pin, or right-click it and choose Pin. Pinned notes always come first in the list, under Pinned. Unpin puts the note back in the normal order.
Sort and set the display
Below the search box, Sort shows the current order. Click it to choose date modified, date created, title, word count or manual order, then the direction: newest first, A to Z, longest first… Filarr remembers your choice.
With manual order, drag the notes into the order you want.
The List display button, next to the title, sets:
- the Density: Comfortable (title, excerpt and details) or Compact (one line per note, twice as many notes on screen). Until you choose, the list follows the display density of your settings;
- the Layout: List View or Tree View. Avoid dragging notes in the tree: a note dropped on another one becomes its sub-page and leaves its folder.
It also leads to Select several notes, Templates, Flashcards, import and help.
Search
Type in Search notes... at the top of the list. Filarr looks for what you type in the titles and in the text of the notes, within the scope on screen. If the note is elsewhere, click Search all notes above the results.
To search your notes and your files together, use the search of the top bar: see Find anything.
Move through the list with the keyboard
The list counts as a single Tab stop:
↑and↓move from one note to the next and open it;HomeandEndgo to the first and the last;Page UpandPage Downjump by ten;Enteropens the note,Deletemoves it to the trash;Shift+F10, or the Menu key, opens the menu of the note;- from the search box,
↓goes down into the list.
Act on several notes at once
Ctrl+clicknotes (Shift+clicktakes a whole range), or choose Select several notes in List display.- Tick the notes, or click Select all.
- Choose an action in the bar at the bottom: Pin (pins or unpins the selection), Add to vault (when a shared vault is unlocked) or Move to trash.
Moving to the trash asks for a confirmation. Esc or the cross ends the selection.
The menu of a note
Right-click a note in the list for:
- Pin or Unpin, Open in new tab;
- Duplicate, which creates a copy with "(copy)" after the title;
- Copy as Markdown, to paste the note elsewhere as plain text;
- Save as Template (see Templates) and Export (see Version history and export);
- Add to shared vault…, with a cloud account and shared vaults (see Shared vaults);
- Add a reminder (see Reminders and timeline);
- Move to..., to change its notebook, if you have any;
- Move to trash, last.
The folder and tags of a note
Open the inspector of the note (the button at the top right of the note), Info tab:
- Folder: choose the folder of your files where the note belongs. It then shows as a card in that folder, next to the documents it talks about. None (root) detaches it. A sub-page shows its parent note instead;
- Tags: type a tag and press
Enter(or a comma). Filarr completes it with the tags you already use. The cross of a tag removes it, andBackspacein the empty field removes the last one. Two or three suggestions, drawn from the words of the note on your device, are added with a click.
The tags of a note are the same on the computer, on the web and on the phone: a tag added on one shows on the others after syncing. Filarr also keeps the name as you typed it (capitals, accents) from one launch to the next.
A tag added by an older version of Filarr may show as Unnamed tag: its name was not kept. Click Name… in the tag, type the name it should have, then Name: every note that carries this tag gets it. The Undo button of the message undoes it for ten seconds. You can also just remove it with its cross.
Importing notes from Obsidian or Notion can also create tags, see Import from Obsidian, Notion or Markdown.
The notes trash
A note moved to the trash stays there. Right after, the Undo button of the message brings it back.
Later, choose Trash at the bottom of the scopes of the list. The Notes trash window lists the deleted notes:
- Restore puts a note back where it was;
- Delete deletes it for good, after a confirmation;
- Empty trash, then Confirm: delete all, deletes them all for good.
